To reach Ijen Crater, visitors must first head to Banyuwangi, which is the closest city and main access point to Mount Ijen. Below are several ways to get to Ijen Crater.
From the center of Banyuwangi, you can reach Ijen Crater by rental car or private vehicle. The distance is about 40 km, and it takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to get there. If you rent a motorcycle, the trip to Ijen Crater will be more flexible and faster, especially if you avoid traffic. From Banyuwangi, you can take public transportation such as a bus to Sempol Village, which serves as the gateway for hiking to Ijen Crater. From Sempol Village, you will need to take an ojek (motorcycle taxi) to the hiking post.
From Surabaya Gubeng Station, you can take a train to Banyuwangi. The train journey takes about 6-8 hours. From Surabaya, you can drive to Ijen Crater by private car or rent a vehicle. The journey takes around 7-8 hours, depending on traffic. There are many buses from Surabaya to Banyuwangi, stopping at terminals connected to transportation options heading to Ijen Crater.
If you're coming from Bali, you can take a ferry from Gilimanuk Port in Bali to Banyuwangi. The ferry ride takes about 1 hour, and then you can continue your journey to Ijen Crater. After crossing by ferry, you can continue the journey to Ijen Crater by private vehicle or rental transportation.
