Mount Semeru is only open for trekking during certain periods, with strict regulations in place to ensure safety and environmental conservation. The trekking season is typically open from April to December, with the best time to trek being from May to October. The trek starts from Ranu Pani, a village located at the foot of Mount Semeru. Trekking on Mount Semeru is a physically demanding challenge. Train your body by walking or climbing stairs to prepare for the trek. Bring proper gear such as a thick jacket, hiking boots, tents, and other trekking equipment. Camping gear is essential since you’ll be staying overnight at Kalimati. Mount Semeru is a protected conservation area, so it’s important to maintain cleanliness during the trek. Carry your trash down with you and avoid damaging the flora and fauna.
Trekking starts from 08:00 to 15:00 WIB. After this time, trekkers are not allowed to proceed to the summit for safety reasons. The trek to the summit of Mount Semeru takes around 2 to 3 days. The usual route starts from Ranu Pani to Ranu Kumbolo, then to Kalimati, and finally to the summit of Mahameru.

To reach Mount Semeru, you need to first go to Malang, East Java, as your starting point. From Malang, you can hire a car or drive your own car to Tumpang, a subdistrict located about 40 km from Malang. From there, continue the journey by jeep to Ranu Pani, the main entrance for the trek. You can take a bus to Tumpang, then continue the journey by jeep to Ranu Pani. The jeep ride takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. If you prefer convenience, renting a car or jeep with a group is a great option. This will make it easier to access the trekking route and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. Jeeps are the main mode of transport to get to Ranu Pani and Ranu Kumbolo. This vehicle will take you through rough and challenging terrain. At some points, like from Ranu Pani to Ranu Kumbolo, you can use a motorbike taxi service to ease the journey, although many prefer to trek.
